According to the announcement previously published by the UK Government; the ETA application process for citizens of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland opened on 5 March 2025. These individuals must apply for an ETA if they plan to travel to the United Kingdom as of 2 April 2025.
With this implementation, as of 2 April 2025, citizens of European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before travelling to the UK.
Under this scope, individuals who travel for tourism, business, short-term education (up to six months) or other short visits and who previously had visa-free entry rights now need to obtain permission in advance.
An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a digital approval that individuals wishing to travel to the UK for up to six months without a visa must obtain in advance. This application applies to those who can currently enter the UK without a visa and do not have a valid immigration status (such as residence permit, citizenship, etc.) in the UK.
As of 2 April 2025, the ETA requirement covers citizens of the following countries:
Citizens of these countries must apply for and receive approval for an ETA before travelling to the UK by air, sea or rail, unless they already have a valid UK visa or immigration status. Passengers without a valid ETA will be turned away at departure points before boarding their flight or other means of transport.
Turkey is not yet covered by the ETA scheme.
Applications can be made at any time; however, it is recommended that individuals who have previously been refused a visa, have a criminal record, or have a background that may affect their eligibility complete their applications well in advance of travel.
The ETA application process is entirely digital. Applications can be made via the ETA mobile application or the UK government’s official website. You must use a valid national passport when applying. Other identification documents such as ID cards or refugee travel documents are not accepted.
The application fee is £10. However, it will increase to £16 from 9 April 2025.
Application results are generally processed within 3 working days, but this period may be extended depending on the complexity of the application or if additional verification is required.
The ETA is valid for two years or until the passport used in the application expires, whichever comes first. During this period, ETA holders can enter the UK multiple times.
The ETA does not grant the right to live, work or settle in the UK. It is only valid for short-term visits.
